The Department of Construction Management recently completed its inaugural Women In Construction Management Summer Institute. Held over 4 days in early June, the Institute brought a group of 16 young women to campus to learn about the department and the construction management industry.

Internship and Outreach Coordinator Anna Fontana and Student Recruitment Coordinator Kayla Boos organized the Institute. Fontana and Boos, both alumna of the CM program, wanted to broaden interest in construction management beyond its traditional applicant pool and help meet industry demand for more female CM graduates.

Learning about CM

Participants attended numerous workshops and activities where they were introduced to a broad outline of the industry including: estimating, scheduling, modeling technologies, materials and methods, and sustainability. They also completed a number of hands on activities, including Boos' famous Lego bridge building activity. The group toured the Ginger and Baker renovation under way at the old Feeders Supply building in downtown Fort Collins and spent a morning working on a Habitat for Humanity build.

Fontana and Boos drew upon the strong pool of CM alumnae to provide technical expertise and support for the Institute. They also hosted a dinner and panel discussion for the participants to provide insight into the challenges and opportunities of being a female in a predominantly male industry.

Looking forward to next year

Boos described the excitement of bringing the event to fruition, "Hosting a women-only program has been a dream of ours for several years, and to have 16 girls attend literally made our dreams come true!" Fontana was equally thrilled with the success of the Institute. "This camp was awesome! The young women who attended, our CSU student mentors, the presenters and panelists, the industry who supplied materials and tours, were all so amazing and we couldn't have done it without them," said Fontana. "When the girls all asked if they could attend again next summer, Kayla and I just looked at each other and said – that's the best compliment we could hope for!"
